What happens when a product gets discontinued?

Learn why products get discontinued and what happens when they do.

Written by Katie Park

Occasionally, products become unavailable due to circumstances outside anyone's control, and understanding why helps you respond quickly and keep your store running smoothly. Discontinuations can happen with little warning, but Supliful will always notify you as soon as possible so you can take action.

Why do products get discontinued?

There are two main reasons a product may be discontinued.

Supplier-side discontinuations happen when a manufacturer stops producing a product. This can be caused by raw material shortages, low consumer demand, production challenges, or internal business decisions. These situations are often outside Supliful's control, and in some cases, we may not receive advance notice ourselves. When that happens, we pass the information on to you the moment we receive it.

Supliful-side discontinuations happen when a product is consistently underperforming across our catalog. In these cases, we proactively review what is available to sellers and remove products that no longer meet demand or quality thresholds. We will always notify you in advance when this is the reason, so you have time to prepare.

What to expect when a product is discontinued?

When a product is discontinued, you will receive an email notification from Supliful. The notification will include the name of the discontinued product and, where possible, guidance on alternatives available in the catalog. The timeline for removal will vary depending on whether the discontinuation is supplier-driven or Supliful-driven, but in either case, we aim to give you as much notice as we can.

Any active orders containing a discontinued product at the time of announcement will still be fulfilled where stock allows. If there is no stock at the time of the order, it will be canceled. Once inventory is depleted, fulfillment will stop.
