Creating a label design can be a challenging process. However, we hope that this guide will make the creative and technical aspects of designing your very first label all easier for you!

You can create labels using one of the two methods:

OR

When creating designs using AI, it is important to keep a few things in mind:

Want to make the colors of your design will look exactly like on your computer screen? Check out this section:

Creating label designs using Canva

In this guide, we'll walk you through the three simple steps to creating your Supliful product labels with Canva, which are:

  • Step 1 – Pick a product you want to sell and open its label in Canva

  • Step 2 – Let your creative side loose and create a design your followers will love

  • Step 3 – Save your design and upload it back to Supliful

Let's dive right in!

Step 1: Pick a product you want to sell and open its label in Canva

After you've logged into your Supliful account, select the product you want to edit from the catalog or your “My Products” list.

This will open the product page and show a big green “Customize and Sell” button. Click it to go to the product editor:

Once you're there, scroll down and under the product stock image, you'll see a “Customize the label” section where you need to select “Canva editor.”

After you click it, Canva will open in your browser – click the purple “Use template” button, log in to Canva (or create an account – it's free!), and voilà, you now have your label open in Canva.

That's step 1 complete! Easy peasy.

Step 2: Let your creative side loose and create a design your followers will love

It's time for the fun part – designing your label.

As mentioned earlier, Canva is super simple to use and has a vast selection of fonts, colors, elements, and other design stuff you can use. To change something, click on it. If you already have a logo designed – drag-and-drop it into Canva to import it.

Add, delete, recolor, reshape – we suggest you play around with the Canva editor and all the options it offers in the left-side menu until you get a grasp of how it works and how exactly you can use it to bring your own designs to life.

Important: keep in mind that you must follow the FDA labeling guidelines. The following things MUST appear on your label:

  • The name of the dietary supplement

  • The net quantity of the dietary supplement, i.e., weight

  • The nutrition labeling (Supplement Facts)

  • The ingredient list (Supplement Facts)

  • The name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor.

These are already done for you in the template, so you need to be cautious not to remove anything.

Once you're happy with the design, it's time to save it and upload it back to Supliful! Let's do exactly that in the final step.

Step 3: Save your design and upload it back to Supliful

Saving your design is part of a separate step because it's super important to get this right – you MUST save it as a PDF for it to work.

Select “Download” in the top-right corner of Canva, and then, under “File type,” choose “PDF Print.”

Once you've downloaded the PDF, it's time to upload it back to Supliful.

Make your way back to the product edit page and select “Upload PDF” under step 2 of the label editing process.

Once the PDF is uploaded, the product image will refresh automatically, and you'll be able to see exactly what your product will look like.

Congratulations on your new label design! It was pretty straightforward with Canva, wasn't it?

If you are familiar with Adobe Illustrator, you can create label designs using the more advanced method we describe next.

Creating label designs using PS and AI

  1. To get started, log in to your Supliful account, find the product you want to add to your store, click on it, and then Customize and Sell.

  2. Good! So now you are on the Product Editor page. On this page, you can modify the product the way you like it – change the description, set up your price, and upload your custom label design.

  3. Scroll down, and under Step 1, click on the Adobe Illustrator link to download the label template:

Now that you have the product templates let's move on to the artistic part - creating your label design and product mockup!

To start, you will need Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator software. You can get each app for $20.99/mo or all Adobe apps for $52.99/mo on the official Adobe website.

  1. Let's check out the ZIP file that we've downloaded. It consists of two files: the README instructions and the PSD file with the templates.

  2. Open the PSD file. It consists of 2 parts:

    • (A) the product mockup image, which is the first layer

    • (B) the label design file that will open in Ai once double-clicked on. You will immediately see it’s a layered mockup image.

  3. Click through the smart layer until you get to the external Ai file (please note that for some AI versions and/or devices, the AI needs to be open first for the files to be accessed).

  4. Once the Ai label design is open, you can start editing it.

  5. To save your Label Design PDF file, select all (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A) and outline text by clicking TYPE --> CREATE OUTLINES (Ctrl+O or Cmd+O).

Then select all your images in the Links panel (click WINDOW --> LINKS), and choose "EMBED IMAGES" from the panel menu.

Now, click FILE --> SAVE AS and save it as a PDF. In the pop-up window "General" tab "Adobe PDF Preset" drop-down menu, choose [High-Quality Print].

    • In the "Options" section, make sure that "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" is not checked.

    • Check the option for "Optimize for Fast Web View."

    • If necessary, you can also manually adjust settings in the "Compression" tab to slightly reduce image quality for further size reduction.
(Please make sure your PDF file is less than 10MB)

Finally, upload the created files to the Product Editor page.

Make your way back to the product edit page and select “Upload PDF” under step 2 of the label editing process.

Once the PDF is uploaded, the product image will refresh automatically, and you'll be able to see exactly what your product will look like.

And you are ready to sell!

Now, let's talk about some essential things to keep in mind when creating a label design using AI.

Creating Outlines

Creating outlines is vital before uploading your label design. That way, there are no missing fonts in case small changes need to be made before printing.

To do so, in Adobe Illustrator:

  1. Select all by pressing Ctrl+A or Cmd+A

  2. Outline the text by clicking TYPE → CREATE OUTLINES (Ctrl+O or Cmd+O).

Embedding Images

Same as with the text outline, it is crucial to embed the images used in your design. That way, they will not be missing when checking your label design before printing.

To do so, in Adobe Illustrator:

  1. Select all your images in the Links panel (click WINDOW → LINKS).

  2. Choose "EMBED IMAGES" from the menu panel.

RGB vs CMYK

Two different color modes are used when creating the design on your computer and printing it in real life. RGB is used for digital imagery, and CMYK for printing processes. That can sometimes cause problems matching what we see on a monitor or phone to how an image looks when printed onto paper.

The thing is that, unlike digital images, prints cannot give off light; they can only reflect it.

Therefore, the CMYK color spectrum is limited compared to the RGB and cannot give those bright and neon colors.

To avoid any surprises about how your label will look in real life, you can check it in CMYK using Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator.

  • In Photoshop, click Image → Mode → CMYK Color

  • In Illustrator, click File → Document Color Mode → CMYK Color

!NB! Please use the CMYK color mode for design review only. Before uploading the label design in Supliful, change the color mode to RGB.

!NB! Please note that all labels have rounded corners on the products.

Now, go on and try it out with a test product! Please make sure you follow each step carefully, and if you happen to have any questions - our support team will be happy to help you out!
